Try walking along a busy intersection and observe the people that pass by. You will see the men in three-piece business suits jockeying for space with similarly clad women. Look down and you are bound to see a race among either brown or black leather footwear. You’ll hear a phone ring and you’ll see almost everyone in the vicinity grabbing for their similar-looking cell phones. The world has indeed become a veritable sea of people who walk, dress, act, and look the same.

However, you’ll find people who refuse to be carbon copies of others. You’ll see people with earrings far from where their ears are. The earring-like pieces are not actually earrings, though. They are body piercings.

There is no doubt that jewelry has fascinated every women and it is something that women can associate themselves completely. Today, the fashion conscious folks have developed a sharp inclination towards body jewelry. And the fact cannot be ignored that men are equally going crazy with the jewelry fashion as the women are. Body jewelry in particular is drawing significant attention of the youngsters and exotic jewelry has the ability to make heads turn around.

Body jewelry is worn as a latest trend and is quite popular among the youngsters. However, its origin and use can be traced back in the ancient time. According to the Bible, body piercing jewelry was popular some 2000 years ago. Earlier, body jewelry was considered to be a symbol of class and standard and in some places, a symbol of religious practice.

There are various reasons associated with wearing body jewelry depending on religion, culture and castes. In medieval age the jewelry was used to boast the status of the person who wore it. Interestingly, before some decades, they represented a rebellious hip culture and the hip youth. Today, in the modern era, body jewelry is a way of enhancing beauty and hence, is a popular fashion. There are many types of jewelry having origin from the ancient rituals and are still popular.

Pocketing is another type of piercing, which is depicted as ‘anti-piercing.’ The word itself explains that it is not something same as piercing. There is a difference between the two. In piercing, the center of the jewelry is under skin and the ends are exposed while in pocketing, the ends of the jewelry are under the skin, and middle is exposed, as shown in the pix here.

Even the jewelry is different for each. Pocketing jewelry is simply a curved bar (as shown below) with smooth ends but no beads. On the contrary, piercing jewelry has beads, jewels, etc. Pocketing jewelry is fitted to your skin and piercing jewelry is worn on any part of the body. There is a risk regarding the fall of pocketing jewelry while in piercing, the risk is there but the degree is less. Pocketing is less popular among the people than piercing.
